IMITATION OF CHRIST
another christ is on the cross
the nails are words
the nails are lies
to make it crawl
and make it scream
and make it real
and make it bleed
and make it bleed
and make it bleed
and make it dream

imitation of christ
imitation of christ

this you who lie and scream
you fall to dust
you fall to dust
in walls of words
the words are blind
you speak and you are dumb and blind
the word is that your god
is you who fall so low and fall so far

imitation of christ
imitation of christ

fly to the moon dear
sew it on a stool
tie on the carpet all the cowboys fall
see the cowboys fat and reeling
dancing underneath the ceiling
leave the bar the theatre's closing
make a wall of your religion

imitation of christ
imitation of christ

mary mary
mother mother
you and me and
god the father
jesus is a woman too
he looks like all of me and you
your money talks and
all your friends
will laugh at her pathetic tits

imitation of christ
imitation of christ
imitation of christ
imitation

The Psychedelic Furs - Lyrics
Chloë Sevigny's much-hyped "Imitation of Christ" collection unfolds:    (Posted September 28th, 2001) Chloë Sevigny, an "It" girl for several years now, received wide acclaim from the industry for her unique style and her involvement in new label "Imitation of Christ." New York September 18, 2000 - Was this the death of fashion? Or simply the rebirth of a whole new way of looking at what we wear in the 21st century? Tara Subkoff, Matthew Damhaves and Chloë Sevigny's much-hyped "Imitation of Christ" collection unfolded in the gloomy confines of the Peter Jarema funeral parlor on East 7th St. yesterday afternoon. The fashion pack sat, as if at a "viewing," on folding chairs in front of a highly polished walnut coffin strewn with lilies. Polly Mellen wondered if we should all be wearing black. I removed my shocking pink trilby. Jefferson Hack flashed knuckle-dusters that spelled out the name of the magazine he edits in London, "Dazed and Confused." Chloë Sevigny, creative director of the show, was wearing a free mason's beret with jeweled crown, thrift shop sweatshirt, and Balenciaga trousers. Andre Leon Talley chatted with Mila Jovovich and Natasha Lyonne. Backstage, the models' instructions were to "treat the show as a wake; to walk slowly and sadly with significant sentimental pauses." And, as the soundtrack started - a relentless wail of people sobbing and screaming with grief - that is exactly what they did. The girls filed past the coffin in a solemn processional of macabre chic, makeup streaked with tears, visible under their black veils. IOC's clothes all come from Salvation Army barrels and the Goodwill -- artfully "crucified" and then "resurrected." As befitted the occasion, there was a lot of black-polyester cocktail frocks from the '50's and '60's were torn and trimmed with lace; trailing pleats or ruffles were half ripped away; a long black gown featured the remnants of what once was a magnificent pearl collar. There were references to classic Balenciaga and Yves St. Laurent, and salvaged versions of the little black dress. And there was more than a hint of military. A tattered olive combat sweater was revitalized with one lace cuff; a faded navy suit had one epaulet. Wartime-look dresses came with the sleeves removed. And a World War II battle-dress trouser suit featured rips and tears. There were gory undertones too. A young boy wandered on with a bandaged wrist - a suicide attempt? And was that the head of Christ hand-painted on a faded taffeta puff-sleeved ball dress? Much has been made of Catholics' condemnation of Imitation of Christ, the latest New York fashion fairy tale. Subkoff, 27, financed the collection with the proceeds from her supporting role in the Jennifer Lopez movie, "The Cell." She has an aunt who was a Catholic nun, and her father is a wealthy antiques dealer. Her mother flies Cessnas and is a travel photographer. Yesterday, she trained her lens on her daughter's debut. Tara and Matthew are both privileged upper-middle-class kids who have decided to drop out of the system. Tara trained briefly at Parsons and Matthew, from Florida, did a short stint at the Maryland Institute of Art. Behind the hype, however, lies a serious attempt by the young duo to genuinely make something out of nothing. The two are fashion radicals who deplore waste and can find a bizarre beauty in what most of us throw away. They have also arrived just at a time when fashion's generation divide between the wrinkles and the kids has never been wider. Moms want labels - their hip daughters want something individual that no one can figure out where it has come from. Will it sell? Sure. All the pieces are run-offs, starting from $200 to $300, and Barneys' Simon Doonan was sitting, eager-eyed, in the front row. The only problem is that anyone with the requisite creative juices can simply DIY their own version of IOC. But maybe that's okay with the designers too. There's certainly plenty of second-hand to go around. (Here's an interesting site: www.loper.org)

CHLOE OPTS FOR INDEPENDENT    (Posted September 28th, 2001)
World Entertainment News Network: Actress CHLOE SEVIGNY would love to make more mainstream movies - if only the parts were better. The AMERICAN PSYCHO star has opted to star in independent, alternative films to satisfy her desire for serious acting, but she would love to move to big budget, blockbusters if the roles improved. She says, "I haven't made a feature since American Psycho, which was over two years ago. "I think after the OSCAR nomination for BOYS DON'T CRY I got a little scared by all the exposure. "I don't want to continue on this independent American streak, but it's difficult to find good parts in mainstream films." (news submitted by CoolPolly)
Nicole Kidman's 'Dogville' Hounds Chloë Sevigny and Others    (Posted September 27th, 2001)
Chloë Sevigny, Jeremy Davies and Paul Bettany are in talks to co-star alongside Nicole Kidman in "Dogville," the latest film from dogmatic Danish director Lars von Trier, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Also signed for the indie feature are von Trier regulars Stellan Skarsgard and Katrin Cartlidge. Shooting on the $9 million dramatic thriller kicks off in January in Sweden. Kidman will play a woman in flight who takes refuge in a small town inhabited by an anguished apple grower (Skarsgard), his wife (Cartlidge) and their seven children as well as Bill and Liz Benzen (Davies and Sevigny). Bill is learning how to be an engineer, while Liz thinks their town is a dump. Bettany will play Bill's best friend and Liz's brother Tom Jr. Chloë Sevigny scored a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for her role in 1999's "Boys Don't Cry" and will next be seen in "Demonlover" with Gina Gershon and Connie Nielsen. Davies has several in the can, including "Teknolust," "29 Palms" and "Investigating Sex." Bettany was last seen in "A Knight's Tale" and has a part in the upcoming Russell Crowe drama "A Beautiful Mind." Von Trier last helmed the Bjork musical "Dancer in the Dark."

news_vanity_fair_cover.jpg - 76064 Bytes (Here's some rotten words by MEGAN TURNER from NY Post.) INSANITY FAIR Tuesday,March 6,2001 IF Chloë Sevigny is a legend, then I'm a cheese-and-tomato sandwich. Vanity Fair's decision to include one of the most over-exposed cynosures of our time on the same page as an actress like Vanessa Redgrave as a Hollywood legend is more than misguided - it's deranged. The glossy's seventh annual Hollywood Issue, out tomorrow, has broken with its annual tradition of identifying actors on the verge of super-stardom in favor of rounding up 10 actresses who are supposed to personify the term "legend." From prophecy to lunacy. How else to describe the inclusion of Penelope Cruz alongside immortal screen sirens such as Catherine Deneuve, Sophia Loren and Meryl Streep? Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet are all fine actresses, with noteworthy turns in "Shakespeare In Love," "To Die For," "Elizabeth" and "Titanic," respectively. But legends? Lauren Bacall, Katharine Hepburn, Anjelica Huston and Jane Fonda - even Julia Roberts - must have been washing their hair on each of the three days photographer Annie Leibovitz shot the cover. Webster's dictionary defines a legend as "a notable person whose deeds or exploits are much talked about in his or her own time." Sevigny's, Cruz's, Paltrow's and Kidman's deeds and exploits are, indeed, well-documented - but do bold-faced appearances in People really count? Admittedly, deciding what constitutes a legend is as arbitrary as defining an "It Girl." But surely assembling an impressive roster of quality films counts for more than showing up at the right parties, wearing eye-catching outfits and having high-profile relationships. (Ironically, the Hollywood issue features a letter from a reader calling the magazine to task for overusing the word "legendary.") VF notes that, between them, these 10 actresses have notched up 399 films and 27 Oscar awards and nominations. Those numbers are skewed rather heavily toward the bona fide legends: 85 films are attributable to Vanessa Redgrave, 98 to Sophia Loren and 47 to Meryl Streep. Sevigny has worked on a total of 10 movies, including the legendarily bad "Gummo" and "Julien Donkey-Boy," and has received one Oscar nomination, for "Boys Don't Cry." And what a difference a year has made for Penelope Cruz: last year the magazine considered her a rising young talent; this year, she's a legend. You may remember Cruz (or not) from Spanish-language films such as "Belle Epoque" and Pedro Almodovar's "All About My Mother." Her first American star vehicle "Women on Top" flew under most people's radar and the less said about last year's "All the Pretty Horses" the better. Vanity Fair's features editor Jane Sarkin, who has produced the Hollywood issue's cover since its inception, yesterday defended her picks. "There's certainly a huge list of people we could have included," she said. "Obviously, we couldn't do them all, but these are the ones we wanted and the ones we ended up getting." But Chloë Sevigny a legend? "I'm not calling Chloë a legend - I'm saying she has what it takes to become a legend. Some of these women are legends, some are on their way to becoming legends and some may or may not become legends, we'll have to see." Glad that's cleared up, then.
