Chloë
made her film debut in the highly acclaimed and controversial hit "KIDS"
which was Larry Clarks directional debut. The film was directed by Larry
Clark and it depictes 24 hours in the life of a group of New York City
skaters and the havoc that runs through it. The film features a group
of kids actually pulled from the streets of New York, as opposed to
professional actors. Chloë stars in the role of Jennie, which was
the only part originally given to a professional actor. But with only
a few days before shooting began, Korine and Clark felt that the part
would be better served by Chloë in the starring role. The other
main character is Telly, played by Leo Fitzpatrick. Telly is quite promiscuous
and spends a great deal of time either talking about sex or seeking
it. At one point in the movie, Ruby, one of Jennie's close and rather
promiscuous friends, decides to get tested for HIV at a local clinic.
Being quite afraid, she asks Jennie to accompany her so she doesn't
have to go through it alone. While at the clinic, Jennie is talked into
taking the test herself. It soon turns out that Ruby is in fact clean
and Jennie is HIV positive. Since Jennie has only had sex with Telly,
the rest of the movie follows Jennie on her quest to find Telly and
prevent him from spreading HIV to any more people. With a surprise midnight
screening at Sundance and a spot in the main competition at the Cannes
Film Festival, Chloë's film career was well underway. |
