In the spirit of This is Spinal Tap, Death of a Dynasty offers a funny and satirical look behind the closed doors of Damon Dash's and Jay-Z's hip-hop empire. Shot in New York City, the film centers around Dave Katz (Moss-Bachrach), a journalist at a hip-hop magazine who is sent on assignment to uncover the often comedic underworld of Roc-a-Fella Records run by Damon Dash (producer of The Woodsman) and Jay-Z (Fade to Black). Dave believes he is a member of the Roc-a-Fella team and privy to the daily "goings on" at one of the world's hottest record companies. Although he is actually "two timing" the magazine (feeding sordid gossip items about the feuding partners to local gossip columns), the journalist thinks he is a real "playa" only to later find out that he is the one being played..

This is a mockumentary and if you are not a fan of rap and don't know much about Jay-Z and Damon Dash, this film will not much appeal to you. The actors playing Jay and Damon, as they do not play themselves, are very good for this sorta material. And, there are some very funny moments and in jokes, especially if you know a lot about the people in this record label before hand. This is also a very good look at hip hop culture and also a moral tale about selling one's soul for fame or respect. But, sometimes, the script is sometimes childish, and the main character is really annoying and is obviously a generic poser, but, maybe that's the point. I would overall have to say for some, this film will seem terrible. But, with a built in crowd, and if you are looking for a few laughs and a different kind of movie, check this one out.
