The movie takes place in Falls City, Nebraska. Brandon Teena, played by Hilary Swank, is adored by woman for his charming and charismatic ways. However, seventy-five miles away in his home town of Lincoln, Brandon is actually a woman named Teena Brandon. The story follows Brandon's new love Lana, played by Chloë Sevigny, and her reckless friend John. When Brandon's mystery is unraveled in Falls City, violence and hatred leads to tragedy. Boys Don't Cry is based on the tragic short life of the extraordinary Brandon Teena.

Chloë received nominations for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors' Guild Award, as well as winning an Independent Spirit Award, the Los Angeles Film Critics Award, the Boston Film Critics Award, Chicago Film Critics and the National Society of Film Critics and a Golden Satellite Award for her performance.
